| The Extended Circle by
Jon Wynne-Tyson ISBN 0747406332 This is a thick volume, full to the brim with amazing quotes about animals and their relation to humans. Just about everyone who's had anything to say about the subject is included here, although I think updated editions of this book have been published in the years since I bought this book, so no doubt a number of more modern quotes have been been added to the thousands already included. From Jeremy Bentham to Spike Milligan to Robert Louis Stevenson, everyone is here and their words will inspire you, lift your spirits and quite possibly have you in tears! A wonderful book to dip into. The Vegan Sourcebook by Joanne Stepaniak This is an all-round great book - but watch out for its second edition which has also been published, late in 2000. The new edition, Joanne told me, is almost the same as the original but with a forward by Carol J Adams and a few minor 'tweaks' here and there.
If you're anything like me this book will have you smiling
sentimentally one minute and in floods of tears the next. It's a fantastic read and
the gorgeous photos of beautiful animals interacting with their human friends add that
special something.
When Elephants Weep by Jeffrey Masson & Susan McCarthy I can state that When Elephants Weep is definitely one of the best books I've ever read. The book is about the emotional lives of animals and leaves you in no doubt that animals feel and sense emotions just as much as any human. Scientific research is mentioned but the best thing is the numerous true stories that illustrate exactly why animals react the way they do to given situations. When Elephants Weep will uplift and amaze you and will ensure you a renewed respect for all animal life. Fantastic! Spoiled
by Nicols Fox Spoiled is sub-titled 'Why our food is making us sick and what we can do about it.' Written in an easy-to-read style Spoiled digs deep into the food industry and uncovers an astounding amount of facts which explain why so many people become sick through the food they eat. This isn't a book which tries to say that eating veggies is the only way you won't get food poisoning as the author looks at the contamination which can occur in, for instance, salad ingredients. However, with lengthy chapters on salmonella in eggs, campylobacter in poultry, bacteria in hamburgers and mad cow disease it is clear that by eating animal products you are risking your health far more than if you were to follow a vegetarian diet. Highly informative and absorbing
this is one book you have to read. |
