Spring is here.  It is a time for renewal, for leaving behind all those gloomy, grey, wintery feelings and letting new colour into your life to lift the spirits in anticipation of summer.  Surround yourself with lightly scented flowers. Lavender and pansies are good to have around at this time of year.

It originally derives from the Mediterranean regions.  It is an evergreen shrub that, nowadays, can be found just about anywhere in the world.  It can grow up to 1 metre tall, has green, narrow leaves, violet/blue flowers and is a very aromatic plant.  In folk tradition this plant has been used for centuries for scenting plants, soothing unsettled stomachs and calming the spirits.

It has an anti-spasmodic, analgesic effect so it can be used outwardly to soothe muscular aches and pains.  It can be used in place of deodorants.  It is useful for calming insect bites.  It can be used for allergies, wounds, acne, abscesses, cramps, nausea, headaches, insomnia, cystitis and much more.

It is the most versatile of the oils and is considered non toxic and non irritant.  However, you should test a little on your skin before using.  Oils are always best used when diluted but Lavender is one of the few that you can apply a few drops neat to the skin.  Try a few drops in a nice hot bath!!!  Works wonders after a long, tiring, day.
