Apart from fishing, the Whiteadder Water is of international importance to geology because of the unique fossil plant remains that have been found there.

In the river bed and banks are exposures of rocks of the Lower Carboniferous age, (about 340 million years old), containing a much larger number of different species of fossil plants than any other comparable locality, in Britain or overseas. These fossils are particularly important because they are the oldest known to contain a variety of different seed-bearing plants and thus provide vital clues to the early evolution of seeds.

Consequently, Scottish Natural Heritage has listed parts of the river as a "Site of Special Scientific Interest" (SSSI). No operations may be carried out which are likely to damage the flora or fauna or the river bed features. However this does not prevent fishing.

Gyrodactylus salaris is an extremely dangerous parasite and the Whiteadder Angling Association are playing a part in making sure that it does not enter the Tweed river system. Anglers are requested to ensure that if their fishing equipment has been outside the United Kingdom in the three months prior to fishing that it is properly sterilised.

Anglers can view full details of this parasite threat by logging on to the links on our site.

Whiteadder Angling Association thanks anglers for their co-operation in this matter.
