About the Club
The Club was founded in 2003. How long it will last willdepend upon the longevity of it's members.Membership is open to all who are middle aged or elderly. The only qualification is that the member can walk from his or her car to the car park exit. Walk leaders may requireproof before allowing anyone to go on the walk.Dogs are not allowed on walks. The only exception will be guide dogs for blind members. We regret that there is no provision for those who are hard of hearing due to the unfortunate incident with the bull. The farmer is still refusing to return the megaphone. There will be no walks on days when it is too cold, too hot,too windy, or too wet.Leaders are chosen for their undoubted skills for findingtoilets or suitable walls and bushes. One of our leaders,(who has an unfortunate problem), has designed a very long walk of 5 miles with a suitable place at roughly 100 yard intervals. We find that most members can manage100 yards. Members are asked to be considerate to local inhabitants. In particular, we ask those with zimmer frames to make sure that the rubber feet are in place. The clattering of 30 zimmer frames makes a lot of noise and disturbs both inhabitants and horses.People who are certifiably insane are not barred frommembership, indeed it might well be useful.
The Club is in the forefront of those organisations tryingto help the elderly. For example, we have been pressing the authorities to get a Stanah stairlift from the centre of
Middleton in Teesdale to the top of the local hill, Kirk Carrion. So far all we have received is insensitive comments.
We have now applied for a Lottery Grant for this project. With the reputation that the Lottery Commission has forawarding large sums of money to unusual projects, we feelthat we have a very good chance of success this time.
