“…the
leading light in the galaxy of young fiddle players.”
Lauren MacColl, one of
Scotland’s finest fiddle players and winner of the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk
Musician of the Year 2004/2005, will be attending the Welsh Celtic Fiddle
Weekend. Held in the National Trust’s Stackpole Centre, Pembrokeshire, Wales,
from September 1st – 3rd this year, she will be giving
workshops on the Scottish Fiddle. She will also be one of the adjudicators at
the Welsh Celtic Fiddle Competitions, held in Pembroke Castle, on Saturday,
September 2nd.
Brought up
in the Black Isle and now based in Glasgow, Lauren MacColl is the holder of the
prestigious BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award 2004/5. She is quickly establishing
herself as ‘the leading light in the galaxy of young fiddle players.’ Immersed
in the rich culture of the Highlands, Lauren learned fiddle through the Feisean
movement of Gaelic arts in Ross-Shire, and it was at the Feis annual
summer-schools that she was taught by the some of the Highland’s leading
musicians. Now studying at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music Drama, her
repertoire reflects her northern background and her love for Gaelic and Pipe
music.
David Hughes and Siân Phillips, Organisers of the Welsh Celtic Fiddle
weekend, commented:
“We received a card from Lauren telling us about herself. We found out
that she was available and more than happy to attend our event so we jumped at
the chance to invite her. She will be an inspiration to many of the fiddlers
attending and we hope that she will get a chance to learn some of our Welsh
fiddle tunes and take them with her on her travels.”
It is
hoped that Lauren will also make a concert appearance in south Wales around
that time.
