| Whitehaven Against Fascism was formed on 25th September 2007 to counter the lies of the BNP which has targetted our area. The BNP recently stood in a local election with a promise to 'oppose the plans for a large scale mosque' in Whitehaven. This typifies the way they misinform the public in order to stir up tensions. There is no plan for a mosque, large or otherwise. The Muslims want a building where they can have a prayer room which is big enough for all of them to pray and a community centre which would be open to all (non-Muslims as well). The BNP have handed out leaflets in Cumbria calling for Muslims to be prevented from studying chemsitry, biology and computer communications and removed from jobs such as working with aeroplanes or in water treatment. The same leaflets call for a ban or anyone seeking asylum from Muslim countries. Robert Cottage stood as a BNP candidate for Colne council. Last October he was arrested for possession of what the police said was the biggest quantity of explosive chemicals ever found in a house in Britain. Police also found a rocket launcher and a radiological or biological protection suit. His co-defendant was David Jackson a dentist from Grange-over-Sands. The BNP insinuate that every Muslim is a terrorist sympathiser yet remain silent about their own terrorist element. West Cumbria was founded on immigration, our coastline and rugged hills have always ensured that as many people came in over the sea as across the land. The growth of mining and the coal trade to Dublin brought in many Irish people. During the Second World War a number of east European refugees came to this area and set up businesses like Seker’s, Marchon and Brannon’s. These provided a great deal of jobs for the local community. Over the past few decades we have seen Asian people move in to our area, firstly to work in the health service, later to run restaurants, take-aways and other businesses. Our local hospitals would collapse without these people. The local nightlife would not be the same without the vast range of foods provided by different nationalities. Far from taking our jobs many of the restaurants and take-aways provide jobs for local people as counter staff and delivery drivers. They provide business for local sellers of vegetables and meats and have their leaflets printed at local printers. What local businesses do the big American chains support? |
