Rodley Nature Reserve

Rodley Nature Reserve is situated 4 miles west of Leeds. Signposted from Rodley Town Street it is accessed by crossing the swing bridge over the Leeds and Liverpool canal. Opened in 2000 the reserve was formerly the site of Rodley sewage treatment works. Still developing and with a wide variety of habitats: Lagoons, Marshland, Wet Grassland, Reed beds and Scrubland the reserve offers the chance to see many varieties of wildlife in a very compact area. There are four hides which are linked by a circular path to the visitor centre. There is a dipping pond, for children of all ages, and special events, such as Bird Walks, Butterfly Walks, Dragonfly Days and Bat Nights are held throughout the year.

Things To See On The Reserve

Throughout the year the seasons change and so does the wildlife you can see on the reserve. Many of our birds, butterflies and dragonflies are only here during the summer months. Some of the migrant birds such as Willow Warblers, Chiffchaff and Whitethroat stay on the reserve to breed throughout the summer while birds like Wheatears only use the reserve as a resting place in spring before moving on to their breeding areas. Other birds, mostly wildfowl, make the reserve their winter home. Winter is the best time to see Deer at the reserve and Foxes can be seen, sometimes walking on the ice of the frozen lagoons, searching for food along the edge of the reed beds. Visiting the reserve at different times of the year will give pleasure and the chance to enjoy the ever changing picture that is Rodley Nature reserve.
