Not all of the war dead from Shirehampton have been commemorated on either the Park Hill war memorial or the memorial window in St Mary’s church. There were also casualties in Shirehampton during the blitz.

55 long range bombers carried out a sharp but not long raid on Avonmouth, it lasted nearly 13/4 hours. In Shirehampton a bomb damaged the Emergency Mortuary at the National School in Station Road, the Salvation Army Hall, the Police station buildings and a number of houses. Of the six people killed in this raid four including one woman belonged to the Forces. Six other folk were badly injured and 11 less severely.
Mr C Dixon wrote 5th March 1945 in reference to the bomb damage incurred to the National Schools
"A high explosive bomb fell just outside and killed two men"

** Killed at "The Greyhound" Park Road Shirehampton, a direct hit! $$ Killed by blast against the high stone wall opposite Gard’s shop, Pembroke and Station Roads. Gard’s and the National School damaged. School used as mortuary in war.

Hubert Collins aged 50. Enemy Action 11th April 1944 (at Bellevue Crescent, Cliftonwood (I think while fire watching) Lodged there with Shire family.
Air Raid April 11th/12th 1941(Good Friday).
11th/12th April 1941 (Good Friday) Bristol’s 6th Blitz. The last large scale raid on Bristol. Started about 10 o’clock, lasted about 13/4 hours and the all clear sounded 7 minutes to midnight, 13 minutes later a second raid started till 3:52am. This raid was far more serious.
A land mine fell at the back of houses in Priory Road, blowing them into the street. A piano was blown from the front room of one house, through a wall into the back room on the opposite side of the road. 5 killed.
